Holding grudges is bad for you, physically and emotionally.

Putting yourself in the shoes of the person who has upset you can make it easier to understand what motivated their actions, and allows you to build empathy skills. Muster all of your strength to let go, so that you can move on.

If you're getting angry there's a chance things are going to get physical. Your body knows this and gets you ready to either kick off, or run off.

Your blood floods with adrenaline, you start to breathe in more air than you breathe out and your muscles tense up ready to pounce. With your blood boiling, it's difficult to think clearly and thoughts become absolute.

Learning the warning signs, can help you to stop things getting out of control. If you're using lots of absolute words you need to take a breather:

- Always (for example, ‘You always do that').

- Never ('You never listen to me').

- Should ('You should do what I want', 'You shouldn't be on the roads').

- Must ('I must be on time' ,'I mustn't be late').

- Ought ('People ought to get out of my way')

- It’s not fair.

Absolute statements are unlikely to be 100% true, but they'll make other people more angry. And you more angry. And them more angry. And... oh.

Breathe out for a few seconds longer than you breathed in, this will stop your body being able to go into primal caveman mode. You will feel calmer and your muscles will feel less tense.

Run. Spend that adrenalin rush on something else, go for a run or spark up the Wii Fit. Once the adrenalin is used up, you will feel much calmer and happier.
