“It made me understand why I was feeling angry, and rid myself of the things I was unable to communicate”
Kinna

Expressive writing has been shown to be massively beneficial for getting over trauma, but more recently it's been show to be useful for everyday happiness and improving mood.

When talking about things isn't helping, writing things down can help to make sense of your thoughts and feelings. And even better: to help find solutions.

How to begin:
1. Write down what has happened, or is happening in detail.
2. Write down how you feel about it, and describe your feelings. Don't worry about spelling, just get it all out.
3. Think of one thing, big or small that will begin to make you feel better. This could be as simple as getting a good night's sleep, talking to someone you're upset with or finding a distraction for a few hours.

You can do this as often as is helpful, or even use an emergency diary to store your thoughts. Remember to keep it somewhere safe.

Smell the bread image

Here's an interesting fact: People who walk into a room of freshly baked bread will love the smell. But then after a few minutes they won't smell it any more.

Same with life: we forget to be grateful for the good stuff because we simply get used to it being there.

Remind yourself of the things that are good in your life.

According to Richard Wiseman, people who did this were found to be happier, more optimistic and healthier.

Talk To The Animals image

Talking to your furry, feathered or scaly friend can be like your own living diary.

They won’t talk back, will like the attention and are great listeners. Infact, it's been proven that owning a pet can have multiple health benefits including lowering stress levels, improving your mood and stopping feelings of loneliness. Pretty great huh?

Use your pets as a soundboard for whatever is on your mind - even if the idea of talking to your goldfish makes you feel silly.
